It’s been a long time since I’ve been this ecstatic about the Stanford Cardinal football team. But, I absolutely love what Jim Harbaugh has done with that program in his third year as head coach.

The team has one of the best quarterbacks in the country in redshirt freshman Andrew Luck, a running back in Toby Gerhart who needs to be mentioned in the Heisman Trophy race (he came into this weekend second in rushing yards and moved into first place in TDs scored during the game), and an offense that is not only physical but scores a ton of points.

Today against the former Pac-10 juggernauts — the USC Trojans — Stanford’s defense came out to play too, creating a perfect storm that resulted in a 55-21 demolition at USC. The fourth quarter of the game was unbelieveable. It was still only 28-21 Cardinal to start the final quarter, but Stanford poured on 27 more points and even attempted a 2 point conversion already up 27 points.

Let’s take a look at some of the salient stats from this historic game…

  • Toby Gerhart: 178 rushing yards and 3 rushing TDs
  • Andrew Luck: 2 passing TDs and 1 rushing TD (rushed for 61 yards in addition to passing for 144 yards)
  • Stanford O: 471 total net yards and only one turnover
  • Stanford D: 3 interceptions (including one returned for a TD) and a fumble recovery
  • Stanford scoring history: According to the game announcers on TV, this was the most points ever scored against USC in the history of that program…I haven’t seen this anywhere else so I’ll be looking to confirm this fact though they said it was confirmed by their research folks.
  • Other: Two straight wins for Stanford at USC. USC’s last three home losses have all come against Stanford — this is a streak that spans nearly a decade.
